Every year it goes the same way. Nothing is in the diary in October, then three things land in the same fortnight in December and you are shopping in a hurry, in bad light, for something to wear the following Thursday. The dress that would have been perfect sold out in November. You buy the one that will do.
Planning christmas party outfits in October sounds absurdly early. It is not. Party dressing is the one category where the best pieces genuinely do go first, and where a small amount of forward thinking — knowing what you own, knowing what the invitations will actually require — saves you money as well as panic.
Start with the diary, not the shop
Before you look at a single dress, write down what is likely to come up. Most people's December falls into three or four brackets: the work party, the family gathering, a night out with friends, and possibly one properly formal evening. Each has a different dress code, and they are not interchangeable.
- Work party — the hardest one. You want to look like yourself on a good evening, not like a different person. Sleeves, a considered neckline and a shape you can sit down in for two hours.
- Family gathering — comfort and warmth matter more than anything. Often a good dress with a cardigan over it beats a "party" dress outright.
- Nights out — this is where colour, shine and a shorter hem earn their place.
- Formal evening — long, structured, and worth planning furthest ahead.
Once you have that list, the shopping question changes from "what is nice?" to "what fills a gap?" — which is a much easier question to answer.
The one dress that covers the most ground
If you buy a single new piece this season, make it a dress that can be dressed up or down by accessories alone. In practice that usually means a fitted jersey or crepe in a strong colour, with sleeves. Flat boots and a coat make it daytime; a heel and something shining at the ear make it evening.
Chiara Boni's jersey pieces are the ones we recommend most often for this, because the fabric holds its shape, travels without creasing, and forgives a large dinner. They sit throughout the occasion dresses edit.
Why sleeves are worth insisting on
An Irish December is not a warm one, and most party venues are either freezing at the door or overheated by ten o'clock. A dress with a sleeve means you are not making the whole evening's decisions around a wrap you will inevitably leave on a chair. It also widens the range of events a single dress can attend.
Print and texture for the less formal nights
Not every December evening calls for something sleek. For dinners, drinks and the in-between occasions, a print or a ruffle carries more personality and photographs better than plain black. Saloni's ruffled midi dresses do this without tipping into fussy, and the burgundy floral in particular lands squarely in the season's colour story.
Silk is the other route. The Seductive Bloom Silk Midi Dress from Dorothee Schumacher has enough movement to feel like an occasion and enough restraint to wear again in spring, which is the test we apply to anything at this price. More of the same thinking runs through our silk edit.
Separates are the underrated answer
A dress is one outfit. A sequin-trimmed trouser or a brocade mini skirt is three or four, because the top changes. If your December has several events with overlapping guest lists, separates quietly solve the problem of being photographed in the same thing twice.
The Bonnie Pant with sequin detail works the same way: understated from a distance, clearly dressed-up close up, and far more comfortable than most evening options. Both sit alongside the rest of the evening wear collection.
Sort the shoes, bag and coat in October too
This is the part people leave until last and regret. A brilliant dress with the wrong shoes is a compromised outfit, and December is a bad month to be breaking in a new heel.
Shoes
Try them with the actual dress, on a hard floor, at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest. If you will be standing for hours, a block heel or a good ankle boot will serve you better than a stiletto and nobody will think less of the outfit.
Bag
Small, but big enough for a phone and a lipstick. A satin clutch or crossbody in a neutral will cover the entire season — the handbag edit has the evening styles.
Coat
The coat is seen at the door, in every arrival photograph, and on the walk home. A good wool coat over a party dress looks considerably better than a puffer, and it is the piece most worth buying before the rush.
If you want to go deeper on formal dressing specifically, our guide to evening wear and the piece on decoding black tie for women both cover the codes in more detail than we can here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early is too early to buy christmas party outfits?
October and November are the sensible window. Autumn and winter collections are at their fullest in terms of size range, and you have time to have something altered if it needs it. By mid-December you are choosing from what is left.
What should I wear to a work Christmas party?
Something you would be comfortable being photographed in by a colleague. A dress with sleeves in a strong colour, or good tailored trousers with an embellished top, both strike the right note. Save the shortest and the sheerest for private evenings.
Is black still right for party season?
Black always works, but it is no longer the automatic choice. Deep burgundy, chocolate, forest green and jewel purples all photograph better under warm indoor lighting, and they stand out in a room where half the guests are in black.
Can one dress really cover several events?
Yes, if it is plain enough to be transformed. A fitted jersey dress in a solid colour reads completely differently with boots and a coat than it does with heels and a clutch. Strongly printed or heavily embellished dresses are more memorable and therefore less repeatable.
We would far rather help you plan the season than sell you something in a panic.
